Trump to the rescue in Virginia?

Virginia’s been a purple state, but it’s trending blue.  Clinton edged out Trump in 2016, and in 2017 Democrats won statewide offices handily, and reduced Republicans in the House of Delegates from 66 to 51.  This year, due to redistricting, Republicans will be fortunate if they manage to hang on to 20 of the 40 seats in the State Senate.  It is widely predicted that they will lose their one vote majority in the House.

Unless.  Polls show Democratic voters more enthusiastic than Republicans, but the election is four weeks away, and that could change.   President Trump could turn it around with one giant rally.  With one such rally in Lake Charles last Friday, Trump denied Louisiana Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards a majority in the jungle primary. Just before the Nov. 5th  election, he’ll be going to Kentucky to help endangered Gov. Matt Bevin win reelection.

Louisiana and Kentucky are hard red, and Trump isn’t helping his own reelection chances by campaigning in them.  Virginia, however, is ripe for the picking in 2020.  If he’s going to win his landslide, Virginia would be part of the red wave.

He’s got some red meat to feed the crowd in Virginia.  From Stephen Gutowski of the Washington Free Beacon:

“Virginia turned down hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal money used to combat gun crime in 2018, rather than comply with federal immigration authorities, according to documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.  A series of Department of Justice memos show that two anti-gun-crime grants were transferred from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), which had previously administered the program, in Dec. 2018. The memos say the transfer was necessary after state officials refused to certify that Virginia would comply with federal requirements to share immigration information with federal law enforcement.”

While the State Senate may be too steep a hill to climb, the Republican majority in the House of Delegates can be saved.  And Trump may have a little personal motivation to save it.  When he addressed the House of Delegates on July 30th, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first meeting of the Virginia legislature, Delegate Ibraheem Samirah interrupted with a speech to the audience condemning Trump as a racist.

Delegate Samirah, like the rest of his Democratic colleagues, is eagerly looking forward to serving in the majority.  They plan on transforming the political structure of Virginia.  The only thing standing in their way is President Donald J. Trump.

Fritz Pettyjohn’s Uncle William served in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1786.

The People’s Champion

(This appears in today’s American Thinker.)

Over one and half million people have attended Trump rallies, and that many again will see him as he campaigns for reelection.  These people all have families, neighbors, friends and co-workers.  Having attended a Trump rally is akin to a religious experience.  The difference is that at a rally you celebrate your country, not the Lord.  But if you love your country as passionately as these crowds love the USA, it’s a very intense experience.

So these people share their experience, and the campaign for reelection begins to gain momentum.  As the Democrats bicker and drift further out of the political mainstream, President Trump rallies, expands, and energizes his base.

It’s a bit more than a year away, but the campaign to reelect President Donald Trump has begun.  All the omens point toward a true watershed election, one that marks the beginning of a political epoch.

Trump won’t be the only winner in that election.  The entire Republican Party will ride on his coattails.  From Congress to the state legislatures, a wave election will bring victories which will cement Republican majorities for the rest of the decade.  Reapportionment is on the ballot in 2020, and the Republican Governors and state legislators will use their majorities to good effect.

What will history call this new political epoch?  Will Trump, like Jackson, have an Age named for him?

As he likes to say, we’ll see what happens.

McConnell needs to be a leader

(This appears in today’s American Thinker)

A Senate Select Committee on Foreign Influence of American Elections needs to be appointed, to probe Ukrainian, Russian and other efforts to subvert our democracy.  Information gathered by this committee can be used by the Senate in its deliberations on the impeachment of President Trump, if and when articles of impeachment are passed by the House.

There are ample precedents, in particular the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, commonly called the Church Committee, and the Senate Select Committee to Investigate Campaign Practices, known as the Watergate Committee.  This new Select Committee is needed to counter the “impeachment inquiry” currently underway in the House.

The findings of the Select Committee will support a Motion to Dismiss if and when the House presents its bill of impeachment.  Such a dismissal is warranted when the impeachment is fraudulent  —  a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

When impeachment is a badge of honor

If a President is entirely innocent of articles of impeachment, as demonstrated in a trial in the Senate, his status in history will be enhanced.  He will have stood up to the mob, and beaten them.  It will be a testament to his impact as President.  He will be the only President who drove his adversaries into a mental breakdown.

That trial in the Senate, presided over by Chief Justice Roberts, would be made-for TV.  The President has experience in these matters, and the entire production will be under the control of the Republican Senate.  With advice from the old pro, no doubt.

It would be a great hit, and ensure a mammoth reelection.

He’s thinking, ‘Go ahead and do it.  Make my day.’

Speak, Virginia

One month from now Virginians who care about their country will go to the polls.  The entire legislature, House and Senate, is up for election.  Republicans control both chambers by the slimmest of margins.  Former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is bragging the election is in the bag.

The people of Virginia need to send the Congress and the media a message.  They need to elect majorities of Republicans to their legislature.  The message delivered would be a vote of confidence in President Trump.

In wave elections, state legislatures become part of the wave.  You never see a party winning a national election big, and also lose state legislative seats.  So let Virginia be a marker for 2020.  And let the wave begin.

Trump won election by the smallest of margins.  For his work on behalf of the American people, he deserves a landslide reelection.

We’re counting on you, Virginia.
